I originally created this site in 1996. Nothing has changed for me about my feelings for this genre of music. I hope you enjoy my reflections. I decided to re-kindle a love affair from the sixties and create a site devoted to
the great girl groups of that early rock and roll era. Two weeks into my
research I picked up a book titled "Be My Baby" written by Ronnie Spector
with Vince Waldron and couldn't put it down. I had to turn away from my
wife so she wouldn't see the tears streaming down my cheeks as I read the
last pages. It is with Ronnie's story fresh in my mind that I dedicate
this site to the Fabulous Ronettes. The music of the period was heavily influenced by R&B, Country, Pop and
Doo-Wop.
It was the bridging of the gaps that gave us Rock and Roll. The white
female groups of the fifties leaned more to pop than doo-wop. Groups
such as the Chordettes gave us the vocal stylings of Mr. Sandman and
Lollipop. Much like the situation on the male side of the charts we had
white singers covering black hits like Sincerly. One of the first groups
to maintain a successful recording career was the Chantels. As we entered the golden age of the sixties women had worked their way
into all areas of the music industry. They were performing, songwriting,
playing the instruments, producing and some even owned their own record labels. The Shirelles were the first all-female group to
hit the top of the charts. They did it with a Carole King, Gerry Goffin
composition Will You Love Me Tomorrow? One of the many appealing
attributes of the girl groups was that their members were generally in their
teens singing about the issues their peers were living through at the time. Instant success went hand in hand with overnight obscurity as unscrupulous
management pushed successful formulas to the limit and then moved on to the
next act with no concern for the kids they were casting aside. Please feel free to visit with us and renew friendships with, or meet for the
first time some of the truly great performers of the early rock era. The
names mean almost as much as the music. Names like....... The Angels, The Chantels, The
Cookies, The Dixie Cups, The Crystals, The Shangri-Las, The Chiffons and The
Ronettes to name only a few. We will also spend some time with the great
single acts of the time. Ladies like Little Eva, Mary Wells, Lesley Gore and
Betty Everett. And now ladies and gentlemen for you pleasure I present..... Copyright © 1995-2009 |
